Grigoriy Davydovich Plaskov was a brave and important military leader from the Soviet Union. He became a Lieutenant General of Artillery. He was also known as one of the most important Jewish officers in the Red Army.

Grigoriy Plaskov's Early Life

Grigoriy Plaskov was born in December 1898 in Minsk. His family was Jewish, and his father worked as a brewer. In 1911, Grigoriy finished his religious school. After that, he started working as a metal worker in a factory.

In October 1917, Plaskov joined the Red Guard. Then, in May 1918, he joined the Red Army. He fought for the Bolsheviks in the Russian Civil War.

After the war, Plaskov continued his education. He went to advanced artillery school and graduated in 1925. He also attended the Frunze Military Academy in Moscow, finishing in 1932. Later, he graduated from the Military Academy of Chemical Protection in 1938.

Plaskov in World War II

Plaskov played a big part in World War Two. His service began in July 1941. He helped fire one of the first Katyushas (a type of rocket launcher) at the German army in Orsha. About a month later, Plaskov tried to defend the area of Zhlobin.

Plaskov then helped protect Moscow from German forces. He also took part in the counter-attack that pushed them away from the city. In the winter of 1942, Plaskov was promoted. He became a Major General of Artillery in the 10th Army. Even though he sometimes got warnings for his actions, he remained a Major General for the rest of the war.

After the War

After World War II ended, Plaskov was promoted again. He became a Lieutenant General of Artillery. He was also considered for the "Hero of the Soviet Union" award, but he did not receive it. Plaskov later said he didn't think this was because he was Jewish.

However, Plaskov received many other important awards. He got the Order of the Red Banner four times and the Order of Lenin two times. He also received the Order of Kutuzov and the Order of Bogdan Khmelnitsky. Other medals included the Medal for the Defense of Moscow, the Medal for the Liberation of Warsaw, and the Medal for the Capture of Berlin. He also earned the Medal for Victory Over Germany in the Great Patriotic War. Marshal Zhukov, another famous military leader, once said, "I don't know of any soldier more valiant than General Plaskov."

In the early 1950s, Plaskov was a Deputy Military Commander. But in 1952, during a difficult time, he was moved to a different role. He became the Head of the Military Department at a university. Soon after, in 1956, Plaskov retired from the military.

In 1969, Plaskov wrote a book about his life called Under the Roar of the Cannonade. That same year, a village in Moldova made him an "Honorary Citizen." Grigoriy Plaskov passed away three years later in Moscow in 1972. He was buried in Vvedenskoye Cemetery.

Plaskov's Legacy

In 2010, a special memorial was built in Sheremetevsky. This memorial honored Plaskov and 81 other former residents. These people had all contributed to the Soviet war effort in World War II. Other officers honored there included Vasily Glazunov.
