The American Students
Two young American women, Sharon Smith and Jennifer Anderson, were studying Spanish at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. They often ate at a small taqueria (a taco stand) on Leibnitz Street.
A Special Request
Sharon and Jennifer didn't really like corn tortillas. They thought corn tortillas might stain their teeth! So, they asked the owner of the taqueria to make their tacos with white flour tortillas instead. This was a bit unusual at the time, as most tacos were made with corn tortillas.
How the Name Stuck
Other customers at the taqueria noticed the special tacos the American women were ordering. They started asking for their tacos "like those of the gringa." In Mexico, "gringa" is sometimes used to describe a foreign woman, especially from the United States. Soon, everyone was calling these special flour tortilla tacos "gringas," and the name stuck!
