Grod Island (which is ostrov Grod in Bulgarian) is a small island located near Antarctica. It's the southernmost island in the Onogur Islands group. This group is found off the northwest coast of Robert Island in the South Shetland Islands.
Grod Island is low and doesn't have ice on it. It stretches about 610 meters (2,000 feet) from east to west and is 200 meters (650 feet) wide. A narrow passage, only 130 meters (425 feet) wide, separates it from Robert Island. The island is named after Grod, a Bulgarian ruler from the 6th century.
Where is Grod Island?
Grod Island is located 810 meters (about half a mile) north of a place called Misnomer Point. It's also 940 meters (about 0.6 miles) southwest of Shipot Point. British explorers mapped this area in 1968, and Bulgarian mappers created new maps in 2009.
