Grote Hutcheson (1862–1948) was an important officer in the U.S. Army. He served for many years, from 1884 to 1924. After finishing his studies at the USMA in 1884, Hutcheson took part in several major events.
He was involved in the Great Sioux War of 1876 and the Spanish–American War. During the Spanish-American War, he helped lead the Puerto Rico campaign. Later, he served in the China Relief Expedition, where he earned two Silver Star awards. Hutcheson also played a role in the Mexican Expedition and World War I. He rose through the ranks to become a Major General. He retired in 1924 and lived in Saratoga, California, until he passed away in 1948. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

Early Life and Education
Grote Hutcheson was born on April 1, 1862. His parents were Ebenezer E. Hutcheson and Therese Turpini. He went to the United States Military Academy at West Point, also known as West Point. He graduated in 1884, finishing 25th in his class of 37 students. After graduating, he became a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army.
Military Career
Frontier Service
Hutcheson's early military career involved serving in the American West. From 1885 to 1890, he was stationed at Fort Niobrara, Nebraska. He also spent time at Fort Robinson, Nebraska, from 1890 to 1891. During this period, he took part in the Pine Ridge Campaign. In 1891, he moved to the 9th Cavalry in Powder River, Wyoming. He also helped Brigadier-General John J. Coppinger in Omaha, Nebraska. In 1895, Hutcheson was involved in the Bannock Indian campaign.
Spanish–American War
During the Spanish–American War, Hutcheson served as a Captain and Adjutant-General. He worked with Brigadier-General Theodore Schwan. He was stationed in places like Mobile, Alabama, Miami, and Tampa. In July 1898, he traveled to Puerto Rico as part of an expedition. He landed in Ponce on July 31, 1898. Hutcheson participated in battles like the Battle of Hormigueros and the Battle of Las Marias. For his service in this war, he received the Silver Star.
China Relief Expedition
After the Spanish-American War, Hutcheson was assigned to the Department of the Missouri in Omaha, Nebraska. From 1899 to 1901, he went to the Philippines. He then took part in the China Relief Expedition. This expedition involved battles at Yangstun and Pekin. Hutcheson also represented the United States at Pao-thin-fu. He was also the secretary to the military governor of the Philippines. He earned two Silver Star commendations for his bravery in the China Relief Expedition.
Before World War I
When he returned to the United States, Hutcheson became a Judge Advocate. He worked for the Department of the East in New York from 1903 to 1904. From 1904 to 1908, he was part of the General Staff. He even went on a special trip to France in 1905 to observe the French Army's training. Later, he commanded Camp Overton in Mindanao until July 1908. From 1908 to 1910, he was a Captain with the 6th Cavalry in Iowa. He was also stationed at Fort Bliss, Fort Riley, and Fort Slocum from 1911 to 1915.
World War I
From 1916 to 1917, Hutcheson commanded the Third Cavalry. He also served as Inspector-General of Brownsville. In 1917, he helped make Fort Sam Houston and Fort Thomas larger. From 1917 to 1918, Hutcheson was very important in creating the Port of Embarkation and Norfolk. This was a major hub for sending troops and supplies overseas. For this work, he was awarded the Army and Navy Distinguished Service Medals.
Later Career
Hutcheson was promoted to Major General on August 8, 1918. He commanded the Fourteenth Infantry Division in Michigan and Maryland. In 1920, he became a Brigadier General. From 1921 to 1923, he commanded the New York General Intermediate Depot. He also commanded the Eleventh Field Artillery Brigade in Oklahoma from 1922 to 1924. Hutcheson retired from the army in 1924 due to health reasons.
Personal Life
Grote Hutcheson married Rosalie St. George on January 16, 1900. He was a member of the Episcopalian church. He also belonged to several clubs and organizations, including the Order of the Dragon, VFW, Union League Club, and the Army and Navy Club.
