The City of Groton is a special part of the larger town of Groton, Connecticut, in the United States. It was first settled in 1655 and was known as Groton Bank. Over time, this area grew into the main village of the town.
In 1903, the village of Groton became a borough. Later, in 1964, the people living there decided to make it a city. The City of Groton is unique because it's the only city in Connecticut that still has its own separate government from its parent town. It is located in the Southeastern Connecticut Planning Region. In 2010, about 10,389 people lived in the city.

The City of Groton covers a total area of about 17.5 square kilometers (6.8 square miles). Out of this, about 8.0 square kilometers (3.1 square miles) is land. The rest, about 9.5 square kilometers (3.7 square miles), is water. This means that more than half of the city's area is covered by water!
People of Groton
According to the census in 2000, there were 10,010 people living in the City of Groton. These people lived in 4,230 households.
The city is home to people from many different backgrounds. Most residents are White. There are also many people who are Black or African American, American Indian, and Asian. Some residents are from other races or have mixed racial backgrounds. A part of the population is also Hispanic or Latino.
The city has people of all ages. About 22.5% of the population was under 18 years old. Many young adults between 18 and 44 years old also live here. The average age in the city was 32 years old.
Notable People from Groton
Groton has been home to some important people throughout history.
- Husband Edward Kimmel (1882–1968) was a very high-ranking admiral in the United States Navy. He was in charge of the U.S. Pacific Fleet when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor.
- Morton F. Plant was a wealthy businessman. He built a large house called Branford House on Avery Point, which is now part of the University of Connecticut. He also helped start and support Connecticut College.
