A Big Tornado Near Gruver

On June 9, 1971, a very large tornado formed just west-southwest of Gruver. At the time, it was the biggest tornado ever seen! Later, even larger tornadoes were recorded in Hallam, Nebraska (2004), and El Reno, Oklahoma (2013).

This tornado was huge. It was about 2,500 yards wide on average, and at its widest, it stretched for about two miles. It traveled for 15 miles but moved very slowly. People could see it from as far as 25 miles away because the sky was clear.

The tornado was heading straight for Gruver, but luckily, it changed direction at the last moment. This saved the town from a lot of damage. Even though the tornado was massive, the damage it caused was minor, about $15,000. However, large hail, about one to two inches in size, fell with the tornado. This hail caused a lot of damage to the wheat crops nearby.

Gruver's Climate

Gruver has a semiarid climate. This means it's usually dry, but not a desert. It gets some rain, but not a lot.
