Gränna Church (called Gränna kyrka in Swedish) is a beautiful church building located in Gränna, Sweden. It belongs to the Gränna Parish of the Church of Sweden. This church opened its doors on September 15, 1895. It was built to replace an older church that was sadly destroyed by a fire in 1889.

History of Gränna Church

Building on Ancient Foundations

Gränna Church stands proudly in the middle of Gränna town. It is a very important building that you can see from far away. The church was built on top of an even older stone church. This first church was built way back in the middle of the 12th century. You can still find parts of its original foundation under the floor of the church today.

Changes Over the Centuries

The first church was not always the same. It was rebuilt and made bigger many times over hundreds of years. For example, a person named Count Per Brahe the Younger helped pay for a new stone tower in 1673. This shows how important the church was to the people of Gränna.

The 1889 Fire and What Was Saved

In 1889, a big fire destroyed much of that old church. It was a very sad event for the town. However, many important items from inside the church were saved from the flames. These saved items include the altarpiece, which is a special piece of art behind the altar. A medieval communion cabinet and some old light fixtures and artworks were also rescued. Today, you can see these rescued items displayed inside the Gränna Church. They are a reminder of the church's long history.

Visiting Gränna Church Today

A Welcoming Roadside Church

Gränna Church is known as a "vägkyrka," which means a roadside church. This means it is open and welcoming to travelers who are passing by. It is usually open from the end of June until the beginning of August each year. During this time, there is often a host or hostess to greet visitors. You can also take guided tours to learn more about the church. Sometimes there is music, and you can even enjoy a cup of coffee.

Special Events at the Church

The church is also used for special events. For example, in December 2019, the Swedish television channel SVT celebrated its traditional Luciamorgon inside Gränna Church. This shows that the church is still a very active and important place for the community.
