Guaitecas is a special type of area in Chile called a commune. It is found in the Guaitecas Archipelago. This archipelago is part of the Aysén Province and the Aysén Region.
The main town and administrative center of Guaitecas is Melinka. It is the only port and town in the larger Chonos Archipelago area.

How Many People Live Here?
In 2002, a count of the population, called a census, showed that 1,539 people lived in Guaitecas. Out of these, 913 were men and 626 were women.
Where Do People Live?
Most people in Guaitecas live in urban areas, which are like towns or cities. About 1,411 people lived in urban areas. A smaller number, 128 people, lived in rural areas, which are more like the countryside.
Population Changes Over Time
Between 1992 and 2002, the number of people living in Guaitecas grew by 20%. This means 256 more people moved to or were born in the commune during that time. Many people in Guaitecas have family roots from the Chiloé Archipelago and are of Huilliche background.
How Guaitecas is Governed
Guaitecas is managed by a local government called a municipal council. This council helps make decisions for the commune.
The Mayor's Role
The leader of the municipal council is called an alcalde (Mayor). The mayor is chosen by the people in an election every four years. The current mayor is Marcos Silva Miranda.
Changes in Leadership
In 2018, the mayor at that time, Cristián Alvarado Oyarzo, was involved in an investigation. Because of this, he was replaced by a municipal council member named Marcos Silva Miranda. Marcos Silva Miranda later won the election in 2021 and became the official mayor.

Guaitecas is part of a larger area for elections. This means the people of Guaitecas help choose who represents them in the national government.
Members of Parliament
In the Chamber of Deputies, which is like one part of Chile's parliament, Guaitecas is represented by three people. They are René Alinco Bustos, Miguel Ángel Calisto Águila, and Aracely Leuquén Uribe. They represent the entire Aysén del General Carlos Ibáñez del Campo Region.
Senators for the Region
In the Senate, which is the other part of Chile's parliament, Guaitecas is represented by two senators. They are Ximena Órdenes and David Sandoval. They also represent the whole Aysén Region.
