How Guaitecas is Governed

Guaitecas is managed by a local government called a municipal council. This council helps make decisions for the commune.

The Mayor's Role

The leader of the municipal council is called an alcalde (Mayor). The mayor is chosen by the people in an election every four years. The current mayor is Marcos Silva Miranda.

Changes in Leadership

In 2018, the mayor at that time, Cristián Alvarado Oyarzo, was involved in an investigation. Because of this, he was replaced by a municipal council member named Marcos Silva Miranda. Marcos Silva Miranda later won the election in 2021 and became the official mayor.
