A Career in Politics
Gualberto do Rosário held several important jobs in the government of Cape Verde. He worked hard to help his country.
Becoming Prime Minister
From 1991 to 1993, do Rosário was a minister. He was in charge of things like fishing, farming, and helping people in rural areas.
In 1998, he became Cape Verde's first ever Deputy Prime Minister. This meant he was the second-highest leader in the government. At that time, he was also the Minister of Economic Coordination. He helped manage the country's money as the Minister of Finance from 1997 to 1999.
In July 2000, do Rosário was chosen to lead the Movement for Democracy party. When the previous Prime Minister, Carlos Veiga, stepped down, Gualberto do Rosário was named the new Prime Minister. He took office on July 30, 2000.
He served as Prime Minister until February 1, 2001. After an election in 2001, another party won. José Maria Neves, the leader of the PACIV party, became the new Prime Minister. Later that year, do Rosário also stepped down from leading his party.
Working with Tourism
After his time as Prime Minister, do Rosário continued to be active. In 2007, he became the president of a group for tourist operators. This group helps people who work in tourism in Cape Verde. In 2016, he was chosen again to lead the Chamber of Tourism. This shows his continued interest in helping Cape Verde's economy grow through tourism.
Running as an Independent
In 2008, Gualberto do Rosário ran for a local government position. He ran as an independent candidate, meaning he was not officially part of a political party for that election.
A Passion for Writing
Besides his political work, Gualberto do Rosário also loves to write. He started writing poems when he was a teenager.
He published his poems in different journals and magazines. Some of these include "Mar Alto" and "Arte & Letra" (also known as Artiletra). He also helped start a publication called "Folhas Verdes" ("Green Leaves") and published his work there.
He wrote his first short story when he was still in high school. It was called "Lume no Alto Selarino." He has also written several fiction books:
- "Hora Minguada" (published in 2002)
- "Ilha Imaculada" ("Immaculate Island") (published in 2004)
