About Carlos Veiga
Carlos Veiga was born in 1949 in a city called Mindelo in Cape Verde. His parents were Alfredo José de Carvalho Veiga and Maria Augusta Wahnon. He went to school in Praia, which is on the island of Santiago. Later, he studied law at the University of Lisbon and finished his degree in 1971.
His family has interesting roots. Carlos Veiga's grandfather on his mother's side came to Cape Verde from Gibraltar in the 1840s. This makes Carlos Veiga the first ambassador from Cape Verde to Israel who has Jewish family history.
His Career and Public Service
After finishing his studies, Carlos Veiga lived in Angola for a short time, from 1972 to 1974. In 1975, Cape Verde became an independent country. Veiga returned home and joined a political group called the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC).
While with the PAIGC, he worked as a judge for the Ministry of Public Administration. He held this position from 1975 to 1980. After leaving that political party, he went back to working as a lawyer. He even led the group of lawyers in Cape Verde from 1982 to 1986.
His Political Journey
In 1985, Carlos Veiga was chosen to be a member of the National Assembly. He ran as an independent candidate, meaning he wasn't part of a specific political party at that time.
Later, in 1989, he became the president of a new political party called the Movement for Democracy Party. This was a big step in his political career.
Becoming Prime Minister
After the elections in 1991, the previous Prime Minister, Pedro Pires, stepped down. Carlos Veiga then took his place and became the new Prime Minister of Cape Verde. He worked as Prime Minister under President António Mascarenhas Monteiro.
Carlos Veiga decided to resign from his role as Prime Minister in July 2000. He did this because he wanted to run for president in the 2001 election. After he left, Gualberto do Rosário became the new Prime Minister.
Running for President
Carlos Veiga ran for president three times. In the 2001 presidential election, he lost by a very small number of votes to Pedro Pires. Pires was from the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV).
Veiga tried again in the 2006 presidential election, but he was defeated by Pires once more. His third attempt was in the 2021 presidential election. In this election, he lost to José Maria Neves in the first round of voting.
