Guelph began as a station for the Great Northern Railway. The railway built the town close to the James River. This location was good for transportation.

How Guelph Got Its Name

The town's post office opened on March 8, 1887. Silas R. Dales was the first postmaster. He named the new community "Guelph" after his own hometown. His hometown was Guelph, Ontario in Canada.
