History

Building the Mall (1970s-1980s)

The idea for Gulf View Square Mall came about in 1974. A company led by Edward J. DeBartolo wanted to build it. When the mall first opened in March 1980, its main stores were Belk-Lindsey and Montgomery Ward. Later, other big stores joined. Maas Brothers opened in 1981, and Sears opened in 1982.

New Stores and Changes (1990s-2000s)

In 1990, J.C. Penney opened as another major store. A year later, Burdines took over the Maas Brothers store. In 1992, Dillard's bought the Belk-Lindsey store.

The mall added a food court in 1998, which is a place where you can buy different kinds of food. In 2001, Dillard's moved to the building that used to be Montgomery Ward. The old Dillard's building was then taken down in 2002. This space was used to build new stores: Linens 'n Things and Best Buy.

Linens 'n Things closed in 2008. In 2010, TJ Maxx opened in its place. Burdines changed its name to Burdines-Macy's in 2003, and then simply to Macy's in 2005. Another store, Old Navy, which had opened in 2000, closed in 2009.

Recent Years (2010s-Present)

A new team started managing the mall in 2011. They planned to bring in more new stores. However, some big changes happened. On January 15, 2014, JCPenney announced it would close its store. It closed its doors in August 2014 after being an anchor store for 24 years.

Then, in January 2015, Macy's also announced it would be closing. This store closed in May 2015. In February 2017, the mall was sold to Namdar Realty Group for $15 million. More recently, in December 2018, Sears announced its closing. The Sears store closed in March 2019.
