The Gulf of Anadyr is a very large bay. It is also called Anadyr Bay (Russian: Анадырский залив). You can find it in the Bering Sea, which is in the far northeast part of Siberia.
Where is the Gulf of Anadyr?
The Gulf of Anadyr looks like a rectangle. It opens up towards the southeast. Its main corners are:
- Cape Navarin (or sometimes Cape Thaddeus) in the south.
- The Anadyr Estuary.
- Kresta Bay.
- Cape Chukotsky on the Chukchi Peninsula.
The bay is about 250 miles (400 km) wide. A long strip of gravel, about 45 miles (72 km) long, runs along its northeast shore from Kresta Bay. The Gulf of Anadyr is usually covered with ice for about 10 months each year. Large whales, like the bowhead and gray whales, can sometimes be seen close to its shores.
Towns and Settlements
Several towns are located near the Gulf of Anadyr:
- The town of Anadyr is on the Anadyr Estuary. It is the main city of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug region.
- Provideniya is another important settlement. It is located on Komsomolskaya Bay, which is part of Provideniya Bay.
- Egvekinot is found on Kresta Bay. It is also one of the larger towns along the coast.
