Gundemar facts for kids
Gundemar was a Visigothic King who ruled parts of modern-day Spain and France. He was king of Hispania, Septimania, and Galicia from 610 to 612 AD.
Gundemar's Time as King
King Gundemar wanted to be friends with some other rulers. He kept good relations with Clotaire II, the King of Neustria, and Theodobert II, the King of Austrasia. To help them, he sent large amounts of money. This money supported their fight against their relative, Theuderic II, who was King of Burgundy.
At other times, Gundemar was not so friendly. He had a tough policy against Brunhilda, a powerful queen.
According to a historian named Isidore of Seville, Gundemar led his army on two important trips. First, he went on an expedition against the Basques. After that, he attacked the Byzantines and surrounded their cities.
Gundemar died a natural death in Toledo. This likely happened in February or March of 612 AD. Records show that Gundemar ruled for about one year and ten months. After him, Sisebut became the new king.
Gundemar was married to a woman named Hildoara.
