Early Life and Rule
Theudebert was quite young when he became king. Because he was a child, his powerful grandmother, Brunhilda, helped rule the kingdom for him. She also helped rule for his brother, Theuderic II, who became king of another Frankish kingdom, Burgundy.
As Theudebert and Theuderic grew older, they often fought with each other. Their grandmother Brunhilda usually supported Theuderic in these conflicts.
Battles and Conflicts
In 599, Theuderic defeated Theudebert in a battle near Sens. However, the two brothers later decided to work together. They formed an alliance against their cousin, Chlothar II. They defeated Chlothar II at Dormelles, which is near Montereau. This victory allowed them to take control of a large part of Neustria between 600 and 604.
After this success, the brothers started fighting again. Theuderic once more defeated Theudebert at Étampes. In 605, Theudebert refused to help his brother when Chlothar II invaded Theuderic's kingdom.
In 610, Theudebert took the region of Alsace from his brother. This made Theuderic angry, and he prepared for another war against Theudebert.
The End of His Reign
Theudebert was badly defeated by Theuderic in two major battles in 612. These battles took place at Toul and Zülpich. After these defeats, his grandmother ordered that Theudebert be sent to a monastery. A monastery is a place where monks live. Sadly, Theudebert was killed there, along with his son, Merovech.
Family Life
Theudebert was married to a woman named Bilichildis. He also had a daughter named Emma. Some historians believe that Emma might have married Eadbald of Kent, who was a king in England.
