Gunnar Axel Engelbrekt Hultgren (born February 19, 1902, died February 13, 1991) was an important leader in the Church of Sweden. He served as the Archbishop of Uppsala, which is the highest position in the Church of Sweden, from 1958 to 1967.

Life and Career
Gunnar Hultgren studied at Uppsala University in Sweden. He focused on theology, which is the study of religious faith and practice.
Early Education and Degrees
In 1925, he earned his first degree in theology. He continued his studies and received an advanced degree called a theology licentiate in 1933. By 1940, he had earned his doctorate in theology, becoming a "Dr. Theol."
Teaching and Church Roles
Also in 1940, Gunnar Hultgren became a university teacher. He worked as an associate professor of systematic theology at Uppsala. This meant he taught about the organized beliefs of the church.
Later that year, he also took on a role in the church. He became a vicar in the Diocese of Härnösand. A vicar is a priest who leads a local church.
Becoming a Bishop
Gunnar Hultgren continued to rise in the church. In 1947, he became the Bishop of the Diocese of Visby. A bishop is a senior leader who oversees many churches in a specific area, called a diocese.
In 1951, he moved to become the Bishop of the Diocese of Härnösand. He served in this important role for several years.
Archbishop of Uppsala
In 1958, Gunnar Hultgren was chosen for the highest position in the Church of Sweden. He became the Archbishop of Uppsala. This role made him the main leader of the entire church in Sweden.
He served as Archbishop until 1967. After this, he retired and was given the title Emeritus, which means he held his previous rank honorably after leaving his active duties.
