Guru Nanak Dev (born April 15, 1469 – died September 22, 1539) was a very important spiritual leader. He is known as the founder of Sikhism, a religion that began in India. He was also the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. The word "Guru" means "teacher" in many Indian languages.
Guru Nanak's father was named Mehta Kalu, and his mother was Mata Tripta. He had two sons, Sri Chand and Lakshmi Das. The last Sikh Guru later said that there would be no more living Gurus. Instead, Sikhs would learn from their holy book, the Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
Besides Sikhs, many Punjabi Hindus and Sahajdhari Sindhis also consider Guru Nanak Dev to be a holy person. Some Muslims even see him as a Sufi saint. This is because he had a close connection with Hazrat Sheikh Farid-ud-din Ganj Shakar, a famous Sufi saint.
Guru Nanak's main message was about devotion and doing good deeds. He taught people to think good thoughts and act kindly.
Guru Nanak's Life Story
Guru Nanak was born in a place called Nankana Sahib. This area is in Punjab, which is now part of Pakistan.
When Guru Nanak was a child, he refused a special Hindu ceremony. This ceremony, called upanayana, involved wearing a holy thread. Later in his life, he married Mata Sulakhani. They had two sons together, Sri Chand and Lakshmi Das.
According to Sikh beliefs, something amazing happened one day. Guru Nanak was bathing in a river when God took him to heaven. His family was very worried because they thought he had died. But after three days, he returned. He came back with a special message from God.
After this experience, Guru Nanak left his job. He then spent his life traveling and sharing God's message. He taught people how to live a good and spiritual life. He passed away in a town called Kartarpur.
