Gustavus Warfield Dorsey (born April 20, 1839 – died September 6, 1911) was a brave cavalry commander. He fought for the Confederacy during the American Civil War. He is well-known because a famous general, Jeb Stuart, fell into his arms. This happened after General Stuart was shot in a battle.

Gustavus Dorsey's Early Life
Gustavus Warfield Dorsey was born on April 20, 1839. His parents were Samuel Owings Dorsey and Mary Riggs Griffith. He grew up with three sisters and one brother. Later, he married Maggie Owens. His family had a long history in Maryland.
Serving in the Civil War
Dorsey joined the Confederate army on May 14, 1861. He became part of Company K in the 1st Virginia Cavalry. This was a group of soldiers who rode horses.
Rising Through the Ranks
In May 1862, Dorsey was promoted. He became a lieutenant colonel. This meant he was a high-ranking officer. After his unit's commander, Ridgely Brown, passed away, Dorsey took command. He led the regiment, which is a large group of soldiers.
Wounds and New Units
Gustavus Dorsey was wounded during the Battle of Fredericksburg. This was a major battle in the war. Later, in August 1864, his unit moved. They became part of the 1st Maryland Cavalry. He was badly wounded again at the Battle of Fisher's Hill.
The Yellow Tavern Incident
One of the most famous moments for Dorsey happened at the Battle of Yellow Tavern. General Jeb Stuart, a very famous cavalry leader, rode up to Dorsey's Company K. He wanted to praise them for their bravery.
Suddenly, General Stuart was shot in the stomach. He fell from his horse. Dorsey quickly caught him. He refused to leave the general, even when Stuart told him to save his men. Dorsey bravely brought General Stuart to safety behind the battle lines.
