Gutierre de Cetina facts for kids

Gutierre de Cetina (born in 1519, died in 1554) was a Spanish poet and a soldier. He is known for his beautiful poems, especially his sonnets.
Life Story
Gutierre de Cetina was born in a city called Seville in Spain. He had two brothers, Beltrán and Gregorio de Cetina, who were also involved in exploring new lands.
Gutierre served as a soldier for Emperor Charles V in Italy and Germany. This was a very important job at the time. However, in 1545, he left the army and went back to Seville.
Soon after, he traveled to Mexico, which was a new and exciting place. He lived there for some time, then returned to Spain, and later went back to Mexico again. He passed away in Puebla, Mexico, sometime before 1560.
His Poetry
Gutierre de Cetina was a big fan of two famous Spanish poets, Juan Boscán and Garcilaso de la Vega. He was also friends with other writers like Jerónimo Jiménez de Urrea and Baltasar del Alcázar.
He learned a lot from the Italian style of poetry, which was popular then. He wrote many poems using new ways of writing, and he sometimes used the name Vandalio. His sonnets (a type of 14-line poem) are especially famous because they are very elegant and show true feelings. Many of his other poems were inspired by or adapted from the works of great Italian poets like Petrarch, Ariosto, and Ludovico Dolce.
Gutierre de Cetina had powerful people who supported him, like Antonio de Leyva and the Duke de Sessa. However, it seems he didn't get much money or fame from their help. His poems have been collected and published in books, helping people enjoy his work even today.
