Guy Patterson Chapman (born September 1889, died June 1972) was an English historian and writer. He was also a soldier who served in the British army during both the First World War and the Second World War.

Early Life and Education

Guy Patterson Chapman went to some well-known schools. He studied at Westminster School, Christ Church, Oxford University, and the London School of Economics. These schools helped him learn a lot.

Military Service and Awards

Chapman was a soldier in the Royal Fusiliers from 1914 to 1920. During the First World War, he fought in France and Belgium between 1915 and 1918.

He received two important awards for his service:

  • The Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1919. This award recognizes people who have made a great impact in their work.
  • The Military Cross (MC) in December 1919. This medal is given for bravery during battle.

He earned the Military Cross for his actions near Ghissignies on November 4, 1918. His group was moving forward when they learned that another part of the army was stuck. Chapman bravely went ahead to check the situation. He took charge and stopped his group from getting into trouble too soon. His quick thinking and leadership saved the day.

After his time in the First World War, Chapman worked in book publishing from 1920 to 1940. Then, he served in the army again during the Second World War.

Academic Career

After the wars, Chapman became a professor. From 1945 to 1953, he taught Modern History at the University of Leeds. He also spent a year, from 1948 to 1949, as a visiting professor at the University of Pittsburgh in the United States.

Personal Life

Chapman married Margaret Storm Jameson in 1926. She was also a well-known writer.

Guy Patterson Chapman wrote several books, mostly about history and his own experiences. Here are some of his works:
