Captain Foulcart's Important Mission
In July 1497, King James IV gave Captain Foulcart a very important job. He was asked to transport a person named Perkin Warbeck and his wife, Lady Catherine Gordon, from Scotland. Perkin Warbeck was a famous person who claimed to be the "Duke of York," a prince from England.
The Ship: Cuckoo
Captain Foulcart used a ship called the Cuckoo for this journey. King James IV had bought this ship from Foulcart in October 1496. It was a well-known ship at the time.
The Journey Begins
The Spanish ambassador, Pedro de Ayala, also joined Perkin Warbeck. They rode on horses to a place called Ayr in Scotland. Lady Catherine Gordon wore a special "sea gown" made of a type of cloth called tanny Rouen cloth. A merchant from Brittany, John Peidzoun, helped get the ship ready for the trip. He was later rewarded for his help.
What Happened After the Journey?
The journey did not end well for Captain Foulcart. Some years later, Anne of Brittany, who was the Duchess of Brittany and Queen of France, wrote a letter to King James IV. She wrote from her castle in Blois, France, to help Foulcart.
Foulcart's Difficulties
Captain Foulcart had faced many problems after transporting Perkin Warbeck. He said he had lost his belongings and had to pay money to solve his issues. He also owed money to his business partner, Guillaume Pomptome.
King James IV's Response
King James IV wrote back to Anne of Brittany. He said that Captain Foulcart had agreed to the job freely. However, Foulcart had also obtained special letters saying he was following the king's orders. King James IV believed that Foulcart had not tried to get help in Scotland because his case was not very strong. Records from June 1503 show that the Breton captain had not followed the proper steps to get his problems sorted out.
