Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Guy II de Nesle (died August 14, 1352) was a brave French knight and an important military leader during a very long war called the Hundred Years' War. He held a high-ranking title called Marshal of France, which meant he was one of the top commanders in the French army. He was known for his courage and was unfortunately killed in a battle in Brittany.

A Brave Leader in War

Guy II de Nesle became a Marshal of France in 1348. This important role was given to him by King Philip VI of France. As a marshal, Guy commanded parts of the French army in different areas like Artois, Bourbonnais, and Flanders during the Hundred Years' War.

In 1351, Guy was captured by the English army during a fight near Saint-Jean-d'Angély. He was later set free after a payment called a ransom was made. A ransom is money paid to release a prisoner.

The Order of the Star

In 1352, Guy II de Nesle helped King John II of France create a new group of knights called the Order of the Star. This order was similar to a special club for brave knights. Its motto, or guiding rule, was that knights should never run away from a fight.

Later that same year, Guy led about a hundred knights from the Order of the Star into Brittany. Near a place called Mauron, they were surprised by a much larger English army. Even though they could have escaped, Guy ordered his knights to attack. He did this because of the Order's motto, which said fleeing was not an option.

Sadly, Guy and all the knights with him were killed in this battle. This was a big loss for the Order of the Star and made it much harder for the group to continue.

His Family

Guy de Nesle was married to a woman named Jeanne de Bruyères. They had a son named Jean II de Nesle. Guy's grandson, Guy III de Nesle, was also a knight who died in a famous battle called the Battle of Azincourt in 1415. His brother, Guillaume, and his cousin, Jean de Clermont, who also became a Marshal of France, were killed in the Battle of Poitiers (1356).
