Guy Clinton McElroy (1946 – May 31, 1990) was an African American art historian and curator. An art historian studies art through history, and a curator is someone who manages and organizes collections, often for museums.
McElroy is best known for putting together a very important art show called Facing History: The Black Image in American Art, 1710-1940. He sadly passed away in 1990 while this exhibition was still on display.
Guy McElroy's Life and Work
Guy McElroy was born and grew up in Fairmont, West Virginia. He went to Fairmont State College and earned his first degree in 1970.
He then continued his studies, getting two master's degrees. One was in Art History from the University of Cincinnati in 1972. The other was in Communications from Emerson College in 1975. For his art history degree, he wrote about the artist Robert S. Duncanson.
Guy McElroy started his career working in museums in 1972. His first job was as an Assistant Curator at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts. Later, in 1974, he worked at the Museum of African American History in Boston.
He became a Curator at the Mary McLeod Bethune Council House National Historic Site in 1978. He was later promoted to assistant director there, working until 1988. In 1986, he also became an Adjunct Curator at the Brooklyn Museum.
In 1987, Guy McElroy was in a car accident in New Mexico. This accident meant he needed to use a wheelchair. Despite this, he kept working hard. He finished putting together the big art exhibition Facing History: The Black Image in American Art, 1710-1940. This show traveled to the Corcoran Gallery of Art and the Brooklyn Museum in 1990.
Guy McElroy's important papers, which include his writings and notes from 1969 until his death, are kept at the New York Public Library.
