Saint Gwrddlew, also known as Gwrtheli or Gartheli, was an early Christian holy person. He lived in medieval Wales during the 5th and 6th centuries.
Life of Saint Gwrddlew
Gwrddlew was born around the year 480 AD. His birthplace was in a place called Twrcelyn commote, located on Anglesey island in Wales.
He was the son of a man named Caw of Strathclyde. His father and family had to move from southern Scotland. They left because of the big changes happening when the Anglo-Saxons arrived in Britain.
Gwrddlew became known for founding churches. He helped start churches in several places. These included Llanddewi Brefi in Cardiganshire, another church on Anglesea, and one in Caerleon.
Legacy and Recognition
Gwrtheli, or Gartheli, is remembered as the special protector, or patron, of Capel Gartheli. This chapel was once part of the larger parish of Llanddewi Brefi in Cardiganshire.
Other chapels in the Llanddewi Brefi area also have their own saints. These include Blaenpennal chapel, which honors Saint David. There is also Capel Bettws Lleicu, dedicated to Saint Lucia. And Capel Gwenfyl is named after Saint Gwenfyl.
A writer named Nicholas Roscarrock listed January 7th as the special day for Gwrthelu. Many believe this Gwrthelu is the same person as Gwrddelw.
Meaning of His Name
The name Gwrddlew has a strong meaning. It comes from words that mean "Vehemently Brave." This suggests he was a very courageous person.
