Hönökaka (which means Hönö bread or Hönö cake in English) is a special kind of soft, flat, white bread from Sweden. It gets its name from the island of Hönö. This island is part of the Gothenburg archipelago, a group of islands near the city of Gothenburg.

This bread was first baked by families living on these islands. Hönökaka is usually baked in round, flat shapes. But when you buy it in stores, it's often sold as half-circles.

The History of Hönökaka

Hönökaka has a long history. It was a very important food for the fishing and farming families on Hönö island.

Why Hönökaka Was Perfect for Fishermen

The flat shape of Hönökaka made it easy to store. It was also perfect for eating during long fishing trips at sea. Fishermen could take it with them and have a good meal.

Just like crispbread, Hönökaka had holes in it. These holes were not just for fun! They allowed the bread to be hung up on poles from the ceiling. This helped keep the bread fresh for a long time. Even when the bread became hard, people still ate it.

From Homemade to Modern Bakeries

A man named Åke "Grytens-Karl" Johannesson started his own bakery on Hönö in 1934. He later moved his bakery to Torslanda in 1960.

Today, you can still find Hönökaka. In 2014, two main companies, Åkes Äkta Hönökakor and Pågen, made this bread for everyone to enjoy. Homemade Hönökaka is often a bit firmer than the bread you buy in stores.
