HMS Pembroke was a powerful warship from the Royal Navy. It was a 60-gun fourth-rate ship of the line, built in Deptford, England. The ship was launched on 22 November 1694.

A "ship of the line" was a large warship that could fight in a battle line. A "fourth-rate" ship meant it had a certain number of guns, usually between 40 and 60.

The Ship's Journey and Battles

HMS Pembroke had an exciting history. In 1709, French warships captured it in the Mediterranean Sea. But the British got it back in 1711.

In 1713, the ship was sold to Spain in Genoa. It was renamed Lanfranco. Under its new name, the ship took part in important events.

Lanfranco helped in the Siege of Barcelona. It also went on trips to Genoa in 1714 and Majorca in 1715. Later, in 1716, it sailed to South America.

In 1718, Lanfranco captured two French privateer frigates near Montevideo. Privateer frigates were ships owned by private people but allowed to attack enemy ships. Soon after this, the ship sank in Buenos Aires.

The Bell of Pembroke

The bell from the Pembroke has a unique story. Since the 1960s, it has been used as a church bell. It is at St. Bride's Anglican church in Otorohanga, New Zealand.

A local family, the Westmacotts, gave the bell to the church when it was built. It was used for every church service. The bell is quite heavy, weighing 150 kg.

In June 2011, the bell was reported stolen from the church. Luckily, the bell's clapper (the part that makes it ring) was safe inside the church. The bell was later found by people who deal with scrap metal and was returned to the church.
