Hackberry is a small community in Cameron Parish, Louisiana, United States. It is also called a census-designated place (CDP). In 2020, about 926 people lived there. The population has changed a lot because of strong hurricanes. Hackberry is part of the larger Lake Charles area.

History of Hackberry
The community of Hackberry has been hit hard by several powerful hurricanes. These storms caused a lot of damage to the area.
Hurricane Damage
In September 2008, Hurricane Ike caused major damage. The storm surge, which is a big wall of ocean water, was about 22 feet (6.7 meters) high. This surge traveled 60 miles (97 km) inland. It flooded Hackberry completely. All buildings, including houses and churches, were affected. The flooding also sadly killed many farm animals like cattle.
Hackberry also suffered a lot of damage from Hurricane Rita in 2005. More recently, in August 2020, Hurricane Laura hit the area. Laura was a very strong Category 4 hurricane. Hackberry was right in the middle of the storm's eye-wall, which is the most destructive part.
Geography of Hackberry
Hackberry is located in the northern part of Cameron Parish. It sits on the west side of Calcasieu Lake. The community is about 8 feet (2.4 meters) above sea level.
Location and Roads
Louisiana State Highway 27 runs through Hackberry. This highway goes north about 17 miles (27 km) to Sulphur. It also goes south about 20 miles (32 km) to Holly Beach on the Gulf of Mexico.
Area and Climate
The Hackberry area covers about 34.5 square miles (89.3 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, about 28.1 square miles (72.7 square kilometers). The rest, about 6.4 square miles (16.6 square kilometers), is water.
Hackberry has a humid subtropical climate. This means it has hot and humid summers. The winters are generally mild to cool.

Education in Hackberry
Students in Hackberry are served by the Cameron Parish School Board. The main school for the community is Hackberry High School. It teaches both younger and older students.
The Cameron Parish Public Library used to have a branch in Hackberry. However, as of 2024, this library branch is not open. Its building was damaged by a hurricane.
Notable People and Groups
The Hackberry Ramblers are a famous Cajun music group. They are from the Hackberry community. This group has even been nominated for a Grammy Award.
