What is Hackness Martello Tower?
Hackness Martello Tower is a special kind of fort. It's a round, strong tower designed to defend against attacks from the sea. The "Battery" part means it also had a group of cannons. Together, the tower and battery helped guard the coast.
A Look Back: Its History
Built for Protection
The Hackness Martello Tower was built in 1815. Another similar tower was built nearby at Crockness. Their main job was to protect British ships. These ships were waiting in Longhope Bay for a Royal Navy escort. They were on their way to ports in the Baltic Sea.
At this time, there was a big war happening called the Napoleonic Wars. French and American privateers, which were like armed pirate ships, were a threat. These towers helped keep the British ships safe from their attacks.
Upgrades and New Fears
Years later, in 1866, the towers got an upgrade. New guns were added, and other structures were improved. This happened because people were worried about another possible invasion from France. The upgrades made sure the towers could still protect the area effectively.
