How it Became a Park

Early Protection

The land that is now Hacks Lagoon Conservation Park first became a protected area on June 8, 1967. It was set aside as a "fauna reserve." This means it was created to protect animals living there. At that time, it was protected under two different laws: the Fauna Conservation Act and the Crown Lands Act.

Official Park Status

On April 27, 1972, a part of this land officially became the Hacks Lagoon Conservation Park. This happened under a new law called the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972. Later, on August 27, 1992, more land was added to the conservation park, making it bigger.

International Importance

Ramsar Wetland Site

In 1985, Hacks Lagoon Conservation Park, along with the nearby Bool Lagoon Game Reserve, was recognized as a very important wetland. It was added to the List of Wetlands of International Importance. This list is kept by the Ramsar Convention, an international agreement that helps protect wetlands around the world. Being on this list means the park is important for global biodiversity.

IUCN Category IV

The park is classified as an IUCN Category IV protected area. This means it's a "Habitat/Species Management Area."
