Hadım Sinan Pasha (who died on January 22, 1517) was an important Bosnian-Ottoman leader. He was a politician and a statesman. He served as the Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire from 1516 to 1517. The Grand Vizier was like the chief minister or prime minister of the Ottoman Empire. He was also a eunuch, which meant he was a trusted official in the palace.

Life and Career

Early Years

Sinan Pasha came from Bosnia. His family, the Borovinić noble family, was from a village called Borovinići near Foča. One of his ancestors, Tvrtko Borovinić, was related to Radoslav Pavlović. Radoslav was a powerful leader in Bosnia.

Becoming a Governor

Sinan Pasha started his career as a local governor. From 1496, he was the sanjak-bey of Bosnia. A sanjak-bey was a governor of a province called a sanjak.

Later, from 1504 to 1506, he was the sanjak-bey of Herzegovina. He even helped expand a mosque in Mostar during this time. After that, he became the sanjak-bey of Smederevo until 1513.

Rise to Grand Vizier

In 1514, Sinan Pasha became a Beylerbey of Anatolia. A beylerbey was a very high-ranking governor. He led the right side of the army during the Battle of Chaldiran against Safavid Iran.

After this battle, he was promoted to beylerbey of Rumelia. This was an even more important position. His next big task was to conquer the Dulkadirids. This was a group that was loyal to the Mamluk Sultanate. Sinan Pasha defeated their leader, Bozkurt of Dulkadir, in the Battle of Turnadağ.

After this victory, Selim I (a powerful Ottoman Sultan) made Sinan Pasha the Grand Vizier. This happened on April 25, 1516. Sultan Selim I really liked Sinan Pasha.

Conquering Syria and Egypt

Sinan Pasha played a key role in the Ottoman conquest of Syria and Egypt. These areas were part of the Mamluk Sultanate. He also defeated the Kurdish emirate of Baban, making them part of the Ottoman Empire.

On October 28, 1516, he led the Ottoman army to victory against the Mamluks in the Battle of Yaunis Khan. This battle took place near Gaza.

The next year, on January 22, 1517, he fought in the Battle of Ridaniya in Egypt. Usually, the Sultan would lead the army from the center. But for this battle, Sultan Selim I decided to go around the Mamluk army. He put Sinan Pasha in charge of the main army in the center.

The plan worked, and the Mamluks were defeated. However, during the battle, Mamluk cavalry attacked the Ottoman center. They thought Sinan Pasha was the Sultan and killed him. Sultan Selim I was very sad when he heard the news. He said, "We won the battle, but we lost Sinan."

Personal Life

Some historical records suggest that Sinan Pasha might have married a sister of Sultan Bayezid II. This sister may have been Gevherhan Hatun.
