Hafiz Hafeezur Rehman (Urdu: حافظ حفیظ الرحمان) is a politician from Pakistan. He served as the 2nd Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan, a special region in Northern Pakistan. He was also a leader of the PML-N political party in Gilgit-Baltistan. He held the office of Chief Minister from June 26, 2015, to June 23, 2020.
Early Life and Education
Hafiz Hafeezur Rehman was born in January 1969 in the Kashtore area of Gilgit, which is part of Gilgit-Baltistan. He went to school in Gilgit City for his early education. After that, he attended Jamia Farida madrassa in Lahore, Punjab, to study religious subjects. A madrassa is a type of religious school.
His older brother, Saif Rehman, was a big influence on his political journey. Saif Rehman was very important in starting the Pakistan Muslim League-N party in Gilgit-Baltistan. In 2003, Saif Rehman, who was an adviser for education, finance, and revenue at the time, passed away in his hometown near Gilgit City.
Political Journey
Hafiz Hafeezur Rehman learned about politics in an informal way at first. Before joining the PML-N party, he was involved with another group called Jamiat Ulama-e-Islam. It was after his brother's passing that he became more formally involved in the politics of Gilgit-Baltistan.
Rehman was chosen as the Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan. He also became the leader of the PML-N party in the region. He was elected from the GBLA-2 area with a large number of votes in the 2015 Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly election.
He ran for election again in the 2020 Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly election for the GBLA-2 area, but he did not win that time.
