Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif (born 23 September 1951) is a Pakistani politician and businessman. He is currently serving as the 24th prime minister of Pakistan since March 2024. He also served as Prime Minister from April 2022 to August 2023.
Shehbaz Sharif is the president of the Pakistan Muslim League (N) (PML-N) political party. Before becoming Prime Minister, he served as the Chief Minister of Punjab three times. This makes him the longest-serving Chief Minister of Punjab province.
Shehbaz was first elected to the Provincial Assembly of the Punjab in 1988. He then joined the National Assembly of Pakistan in 1990. He became Chief Minister of Punjab for the first time in 1997. After a change in government in 1999, Shehbaz and his family lived in Saudi Arabia for several years. They returned to Pakistan in 2007.
He became Chief Minister of Punjab again in 2008 and for a third time in 2013. During his time as Chief Minister, Shehbaz was known for being a very skilled and hardworking leader. He started many big building projects in Punjab. He was also praised for running the government well.

Shehbaz Sharif's Early Life and Family
Growing Up in Lahore
Shehbaz Sharif was born on 23 September 1951, in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan. His family spoke Punjabi and had roots in Kashmir. His father, Mian Muhammad Sharif, was a successful businessman. His family moved from Amritsar district to Lahore after Pakistan became independent in 1947. Shehbaz went to St. Anthony High School, Lahore.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Government College University, Lahore. After finishing college, he joined his family's business, the Ittefaq Group. In 1985, he became the president of the Lahore Chamber of Commerce & Industry.
His Family Life

Shehbaz Sharif has two brothers, Abbas Sharif and Nawaz Sharif. His elder brother, Nawaz Sharif, has served as Prime Minister of Pakistan three times.
Shehbaz married Nusrat Shehbaz in 1973. They have four children: Salman, Hamza, and twin daughters Javeria and Rabia. He later married Aaliya Honey in 1993, but they separated after a year. In 2003, he married his third wife, Tehmina Durrani. He lives in his family home in Lahore, called Raiwind Palace.
Shehbaz Sharif's Political Journey
Starting in Politics
Shehbaz Sharif began his political career in 1988. He was elected to the Provincial Assembly of Punjab from Lahore. His term ended early in 1990 when the assemblies were dissolved.
He was re-elected to the Punjab Assembly in 1990. In the same election, he was also elected to the National Assembly of Pakistan. He chose to keep his seat in the National Assembly. His term ended early again in 1993.
In 1993, he was re-elected to the Punjab Assembly. He also won a seat in the National Assembly but chose to keep his Punjab Assembly seat. Soon after, he became the Leader of the Opposition in the Provincial Assembly of Punjab.
Becoming Chief Minister of Punjab
Shehbaz was re-elected to the Punjab Assembly in 1997. He was sworn in as the 13th Chief Minister of Punjab on 20 February 1997.
During his first time as Chief Minister, he was praised for good governance. He focused on improving health, education, farming, and industries. He also started many development projects in Lahore. He worked to keep law and order in the province.
His first term ended on 12 October 1999, when the government changed. He was then imprisoned. In December 2000, he and his family moved to Saudi Arabia for a period of self-exile. While in exile, he became the President of his party, PML-N, in 2002. He later moved to the United Kingdom for medical reasons.
Returning as Chief Minister
Shehbaz returned to Pakistan in November 2007. He was re-elected as Chief Minister of Punjab in June 2008. His second term lasted until February 2009. A court decision briefly removed him from office, but it was overturned in April 2009, and he returned as Chief Minister.
He was elected Chief Minister of Punjab for the third time in the 2013 general election. He served his full term until 2018. In 2017, he was chosen as the leader of PML-N. This meant he was expected to become Prime Minister after his brother, Nawaz Sharif, was no longer able to hold office. However, he remained Chief Minister of Punjab.
In February 2018, Shehbaz became the interim President of the PML-N. He was then elected as the party's President in March. His third term as Chief Minister ended on 7 June 2018.
Leader of the Opposition
In the 2018 Pakistani general election, Shehbaz was elected to the National Assembly. He was nominated by his party for the role of Prime Minister but lost the election. On 20 August 2018, he was officially named the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly.

First Term as Prime Minister (2022-2023)

On 10 April 2022, Shehbaz Sharif was chosen by opposition parties to be their candidate for Prime Minister. This happened after a vote of no confidence against the previous Prime Minister.
He was elected Prime Minister on 11 April 2022. He took his oath of office on the same day. During his first term, Pakistan faced a difficult economic situation. His government worked to get financial help from the IMF. They also tried to improve relations with the United States.
On 12 August 2023, the parliament's five-year term was about to end. To allow more time for elections, Sharif and his allies agreed to dissolve the parliament on 9 August 2023. This was approved by the President of Pakistan.
Second Term as Prime Minister (2024-Present)
On 3 March 2024, Shehbaz Sharif was re-elected as Prime Minister of Pakistan for a second time. He received 201 votes.
During his second term, Pakistan hosted the 2024 SCO summit. At this meeting, Shehbaz discussed regional development and cooperation with leaders from India and other countries. His government also started a new operation called Operation Azm-e-Istehkam. They also tried to make changes to the Judiciary of Pakistan through new constitutional amendments.
Protests have continued in Pakistan due to economic challenges. Tax rates have increased, and people's purchasing power has gone down because of rising inflation.
