Hallelujah Junction is a small, unincorporated community located in Lassen County, California. It sits about 4 miles (6.4 km) east-southeast of Beckwourth Pass. This area is quite high up, at an elevation of 5,033 feet (1,534 meters) above sea level. It's an important spot because it's where two major roads meet: U.S. Route 395 and State Route 70.

The Story of Hallelujah Junction

Hallelujah Junction began when a man named Orville Stoy moved there. He built a home and opened a gas station for travelers. This was during a time in history when certain goods, like alcohol, were not allowed to be sold.

By 1940, the area had grown quite a bit. There was a place to eat, a bar, and even a motel for people to stay. There was also a small landing strip for planes called the "Hallelujah International Airport." This airport was on an old part of Highway 70.

However, Hallelujah Junction eventually changed completely. In 1973, the State of California bought the land. They then cleared everything away to build a new, wider four-lane freeway.

A Musical Connection

Hallelujah Junction is also famous for something else. A well-known American composer named John Adams has a cabin nearby. He liked the name of this place so much that he wrote a piece of music called "Hallelujah Junction". It's a special song written for two pianos.
