Hallstead's Story: A Look at Its History
Hallstead was first settled by people in 1787. It was officially made a town on November 28, 1874. At that time, it was called Great Bend Village.
Later, in 1887, the town's name was changed to Hallstead Borough. This was done to honor William F. Hallstead. He was the president of a big train company called the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad.

Hallstead is part of the Blue Ridge School District. The schools for students of all ages are located about 9 miles (14 km) south of Hallstead.

- Middle School: Students in grades 6 through 8 go to the Middle School. There are about 297 students here.

The Foundry: A Local Industry
The Foundry is a large area of land, about 27 acres (109,265 square meters), located on Main Street in Hallstead.
In the early 1900s, this site was used to make lead crystal products. After about 30 years, it changed ownership. It then became a major foundry, which is a factory where metal is melted and shaped into different forms.
Reading and Learning: The Library System
The Hallstead-Great Bend Branch Library is an important place for learning. It is located at 201 Franklin Street in Hallstead.
Here is a timeline of how the library grew:
- 1899: People in the town first talked about creating a "Citizen's Library."
- 1915: A special building was built for the Hallstead Borough.
- 1916: The Hallstead Women's Christian Temperance Union opened a "Reading Room" for everyone to use.
- 1917: The library rented a room and started with 40 books.
- 1918: The library moved to a new house because it needed more space.
- 1920: The Hallstead Public Library moved to its current location, sharing space with the local jail.
- 1929: A group called the Civic Club started a Book Club.
