In 1909, a railroad company called the Milwaukee Road planned a train route through Roseland. However, this train line was never built.

In 1980, Hamill became a "census-designated place" (CDP). This means it's an area that the U.S. Census Bureau defines for gathering population data. The Hamill CDP covers about 1.2 square miles (3.1 square kilometers) of land.
