Hamilton is a small, unincorporated community in Boone County, Kentucky, United States. It's located in the southern part of the county, right by the Ohio River. It's about a mile north of where Big Bone Creek meets the Ohio River. The community was started in 1835. It was first called the Town of Landing by the Kentucky Legislature. Joel Hamilton and George McGlasson planned the town.

History of Hamilton

Early Days and Name Change

The town was first established in 1835. It was known as the Town of Landing. In 1846, the name of the town was changed to Hamilton. This was done to honor Joel Hamilton, who helped found the town. He had moved to Texas by then. The town was allowed to collect taxes the next year. This was a property tax.

Growth and Development

In 1849, the town of Hamilton grew bigger. Its boundaries were extended. A new road, the Hamilton and Union Turnpike, was started in 1852. This road might have been connected to the Big Bone Hotel Company. The hotel was built near the Big Bone Springs the year before. Other roads were also planned in the area around that time.

Later Years and Decline

The mid-1800s seemed to be the best time for Hamilton. It was still an active community into the early 1900s. People would travel by steamboat to Hamilton to buy supplies. During the American Civil War in 1862, soldiers from both sides visited the town. Union soldiers had camped there just before Confederate scouts arrived.

Hamilton was also important for people visiting Big Bone. It was the river access point for those going to Big Bone Lick. Today, only a few houses remain where the town once stood. The Hamilton Graded School was open until the 1980s. It had 143 students in 1954 and 120 students in 1982. The school was later closed and the building was torn down.
