Hamilton Creek (Cahuilla Creek tributary) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Hamilton Creek is a small stream in Riverside County, California. It is a tributary of Cahuilla Creek, which then flows into Wilson Creek, Temecula Creek, and finally the Santa Margarita River. Hamilton Creek starts high up on Lookout Mountain in the Santa Rosa Mountains. It then flows down to the Anza Valley.

History of Hamilton Creek

Hamilton Creek was named after a man named Jim Hamilton. He was an African American rancher. In the early 1880s, Jim Hamilton lost his farm in Butterfield Valley because of a legal problem over land ownership.

After this, Hamilton moved to the lands where the Cahuilla people lived. He started a new ranch in the Anza Valley with two of his sons. They raised cattle there. This area was first known as the Hamilton Plain. The Hamilton School in Anza was also named to honor Jim Hamilton.
