Antônio Hamilton Martins Mourão (born August 15, 1953) is a Brazilian politician and a retired military officer. He served as the 25th Vice President of Brazil from 2019 to 2023. Currently, he is a Senator representing the state of Rio Grande do Sul.
Mourão was part of the Brazilian Army for nearly 50 years, from 1971 to 2018. He reached the rank of General, which is the highest rank a Brazilian soldier can achieve during peacetime. In the 2018 election, he became the running mate for Jair Bolsonaro in his successful campaign for president. They were elected, and Mourão became Vice President on January 1, 2019.
After his term as Vice President, Mourão ran for the Senate in the 2022 Brazilian general election. He won the election and began his term as Senator for Rio Grande do Sul on February 1, 2023.

Early Life and Background
Mourão was born in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. His father, Antônio Hamilton Mourão, was also a General in the army. His mother was Wanda Coronel Martins.
He identifies as being of Indigenous Brazilian descent. Mourão is a practicing Roman Catholic.
Military Career
Joining the Brazilian Army
Mourão joined the Brazilian Army in February 1972. He attended the Academia Militar das Agulhas Negras (AMAN) in Resende, Rio de Janeiro. He became an officer on December 12, 1975.
As a lieutenant, he worked as an instructor at the Military Academy. Later, as a captain, he worked with Jair Bolsonaro in the 8th Paratrooper Field Artillery Group in Rio de Janeiro.
Training and Commands
Mourão also studied at the Escola de Comando e Estado-Maior do Exército (ECEME). There, he became a Staff Officer and took classes in politics, strategy, and army administration. He also trained in parachuting.
During his military career, he was an instructor at AMAN. He also participated in a peace mission in Angola. He was a Military Attaché for Brazil's Embassy in Venezuela. He commanded several important units, including:
- The 27th Field Artillery Group in Ijuí, Rio Grande do Sul.
- The 2nd Jungle Infantry Brigade in São Gabriel da Cachoeira, Amazonas.
- The 6th Army Division and Military Command of the South in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul.
He retired from active service in 2018.
Political Career
Entering Politics

Mourão became more widely known in 2015 during a political time of change in Brazil. He was moved to a different role in the army due to some public statements he made about the country's politics.
In May 2018, during a truck drivers' strike, Mourão spoke about the government's role. He said that if the government could not lead, it should resign or call for earlier elections. He emphasized that the country should not fall into chaos.
Running for Vice President in 2018
On May 8, 2018, Mourão joined the Brazilian Labour Renewal Party (PRTB). He initially planned to run for President. However, in August 2018, he became the vice presidential running mate for Jair Bolsonaro.
On October 28, 2018, Jair Bolsonaro won the Brazilian presidential election. Mourão became the Vice President-elect.
Vice President of Brazil (2019–2023)
Mourão was sworn in as the Vice President of Brazil on January 1, 2019. During his time as Vice President, he was sometimes seen as a more moderate voice within the government.
In March 2022, Mourão changed his political party to Republicanos. He announced his plan to run for the Senate to represent Rio Grande do Sul. He also supported Jair Bolsonaro's reelection campaign.
As Bolsonaro left the country on December 30, 2022, Mourão, as the acting president, made the final statement before his term ended on December 31, 2022.
Senator from Rio Grande do Sul (2023-present)
In the 2022 Brazilian general election, Mourão successfully ran for the Senate. He represents the state of Rio Grande do Sul as a member of the Republicanos party. He officially took office on February 1, 2023.
Personal Life
Mourão became a widower in December 2016. He married Paula Mourão in October 2018. Paula is a first lieutenant in the Brazilian Army, which is where they met. They made their relationship public in 2017. The Mourãos have homes in Brasília and Rio de Janeiro.
