Hamish Clive Carter (born April 28, 1971, in Auckland, New Zealand) is a famous triathlete from New Zealand. A triathlete is an athlete who competes in a triathlon, which is a race that combines three sports: swimming, cycling, and running.

Hamish Carter is best known for winning the gold medal in triathlon at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. This was his second time competing in the Olympic Games. He also competed professionally in the International Triathlon Union World Cup series for many years, winning the overall World Cup title in 1998. He announced his retirement from the sport in early 2007.

Early Life and Sports

Hamish Carter went to Auckland Grammar School when he was younger. While there, he was a very good rower. He even competed twice in the Maadi Cup, which is a big rowing competition for schools in New Zealand.

In 2002, Hamish won the bronze medal in triathlon at the 2002 Commonwealth Games held in Manchester, England. This was a great achievement on a big international stage.

Olympic Gold Medal

Two years later, Hamish Carter achieved his biggest dream. He won the triathlon gold medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. He finished the race in 1 hour, 51 minutes, and 7.73 seconds. He beat his fellow New Zealander, Bevan Docherty, by less than eight seconds in an exciting finish!

World Championship Medals

Hamish also won several medals at the ITU Triathlon World Championships.

  • In 1993, he won a bronze medal in Manchester.
  • In 1997, he earned a silver medal in Perth.
  • In 2006, he won another silver medal at the World Championships in Lausanne, Switzerland. He finished 17 seconds behind the winner, Tim Don.

Xterra World Championship

In October 2006, Hamish Carter also won the Xterra World Championship in Maui, Hawaii. This race is a type of off-road triathlon, which means it involves mountain biking and trail running instead of road cycling and running. He won against many athletes who had more experience in off-road triathlons.

Retirement

After a long and successful career, Hamish Carter announced that he was retiring from professional triathlon on March 6, 2007. He had won twelve ITU World Cup races during his time as a professional athlete.
