What's in the Name?
The name Hammenhög has a very old history. It comes from a Bronze-Age grave. The first part of the name, Hammen-, likely refers to a person. This person might have been named Haming or Hamund.
The second part, -hög, comes from an Old Norse word. That word is Haugr. Haugr means a mound or a barrow. A barrow is a type of ancient burial ground. So, the name Hammenhög basically means "Haming's Mound" or "Hamund's Barrow." This tells us that the area has been important for a very long time.
