Hammil Valley is a small, unincorporated community located in Mono County, California. An unincorporated community means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. It's about 9 miles (14 kilometers) west-northwest of White Mountain Peak. The area sits high up, at an elevation of 4,593 feet (1,400 meters) above sea level.

About Hammil Valley

Hammil Valley is a quiet spot in the eastern part of California. It's known for its natural beauty and its connection to the past. The community is quite small, with about 102 people living there as of the year 2000.

A Bit of History

The story of Hammil Valley began in 1870. Three brothers named William, Hugh, and Robert Hammil settled in this area. They built their homes and started new lives here. This is how the valley got its name!

Years later, in 1883, something important happened. The Carson and Colorado Railroad built a train station in the valley. They named the station after the Hammil brothers, making it a key stop for trains.

The community also had its own postal service for a while. It was called Mocalno and operated from 1915 to 1937. The name "Mocalno" was a clever mix. It combined "Mono" (from Mono County) with "cal" (for California).

Life Today

Today, Hammil Valley remains a small community. Most of the people who live here travel to the nearby town of Bishop. They go there for school, work, and to find more services like shops and medical care. Even though it's small, Hammil Valley is a place with a rich history.
