The Story of Hammon
Hammon is named after a person called James H. Hammon. He was an "Indian agent." This means he worked with Native American tribes. He was assigned to the Red Moon Agency, which was close to where Hammon is now.
His job was to build a school for the Cheyenne and Arapaho people. He also taught them how to farm. His wife, Ida M. Hammon, became the postmaster. A post office was set up in their home on June 30, 1894.
The town of Hammon was first located in Custer County. But in 1910, a railroad was built west of the town. This railroad was called the Wichita Falls and Northwestern Railroad.
Because of the railroad, most of the town moved west. It moved into Roger Mills County to be closer to the train tracks. On May 22, 1911, Hammon officially became an incorporated town.
