The Story of Hammond, Montana

Hammond first started in the 1930s. It began with a simple store and a gas station. These were built when U.S. Highway 212 was being constructed. Today, Hammond is very small. It has an active post office and one home where a rancher lives. There are also three other buildings near the highway. These buildings are old and no longer used.

Where is Hammond Located?

Hammond is in the southeastern part of Montana. It is close to the border with Wyoming. You can find it between two other small communities. These are Boyes and Alzada, both in Carter County. Hammond is about 61 miles (98 km) southwest of Ekalaka. Ekalaka is the main town, or "county seat," for Carter County. The land around Hammond is mostly used for ranching.

Hammond has a type of weather called a semi-arid climate. This means it's usually dry, but not a complete desert. It gets some rain, but not a lot. On climate maps, this type of weather is often shown as "BSk." This climate is common in areas that are dry but still have enough moisture for some plants to grow.
