From Hamlet to Airport Land
In 1953, the land around Hampton was chosen for a new airport. This airport was first called the Kansas City Industrial Airport.
Later, in 1966, the big city of Kansas City, Missouri, took over Hampton. This happened when the airport was being made bigger. It was upgraded to become the Kansas City International Airport.
How Hampton Got Its Name
Hampton was one of the first settlements in the area. This was after the Platte Purchase happened in 1836. The Platte Purchase was when the United States bought land from Native American tribes.
The community was named after Hampton Kimsey. He owned the land where the hamlet was built. A post office opened in Hampton in 1853. It stayed open for many years, until 1904.
Where Was Hampton Located?
The former hamlet of Hampton was just south of the airport. You could get to Farley, Missouri from Hampton. This was by traveling west on NW Farley Hampton Road.
Another road, NW Hampton Road, went south from the community. Today, Hampton is considered a neighborhood of Kansas City. It is part of the area known as KCI-2nd Creek.
