The History of the Hampton Classic
The idea for a horse show in Southampton started a long time ago. Early shows took place in the early 1900s. However, these shows stopped during World War I.
Revivals and New Beginnings
The show came back in the 1920s but stopped again during World War II. It was revived a third time in 1959. This version was called the "Southampton Horse Show." It also ended in the mid-1960s.
The Hampton Classic we know today began in 1971. It started as a one-day show by the Topping Riding Club in Sagaponack, New York. In 1976, it grew into a five-day event. It was first held at Dune Alpin Farm in East Hampton.
Finding a Permanent Home
In 1978, the show officially changed its name to the Hampton Classic. Then, in 1982, it moved to its current location. You can find it on Snake Hollow Road in Bridgehampton.
What Happens at the Horse Show?
The Hampton Classic is a huge event for horses and riders. In 2006, over 1,300 horses were part of the show. There was also more than $500,000 given out in prize money!
The Social Scene and VIP Area
The show is also famous for its lively social scene. Many fancy companies help sponsor the event. There's a special VIP tent that can hold 3,000 guests. White-coated waiters serve everyone there.
Visitors often walk around the grounds with their dogs. Many people wear elaborate hats, especially for the important Grand Prix event. The Grand Prix is the main competition held on the last Sunday of the show.
Dealing with the Weather
The Hampton Classic takes place during the peak of Atlantic hurricane season. This means the show sometimes has to deal with hurricanes or heavy rain.
Storms and Delays
In 1976, a storm flattened the tents just before the show began. In 2011, Hurricane Irene caused a big delay. The start of the Hampton Classic was postponed for three days!
Horse jumping contests usually continue even when it rains. They only stop if the weather creates real dangers for the horses and riders. Safety is always the top priority.
