The Hampton Classic Horse Show, often called the Hampton Classic, is a very important horse jumping competition. It's one of the biggest show jumping events in the United States. This exciting show happens every year around Labor Day in Bridgehampton, New York. This area is part of Southampton, New York, a famous place called the Hamptons. The Hampton Classic is also known as a big social event. It marks the end of the summer season in the Hamptons. For example, in 2013, the show took place from August 25 to September 1.

The History of the Hampton Classic

How the Show Began

The idea for a horse show in Southampton started a long time ago, in the early 1900s. That first show stopped during World War I. It was brought back in the 1920s but then stopped again during World War II. It was revived a third time in 1959 as the "Southampton Horse Show." However, this version also ended in the mid-1960s.

The Modern Hampton Classic

The Hampton Classic we know today began in 1971. It started as a one-day event organized by the Topping Riding Club in Sagaponack, New York. By 1976, it had grown into a five-day show. It was first held at Dune Alpin Farm in East Hampton (town), New York. In 1978, the show officially changed its name to the Hampton Classic. Then, in 1982, it moved to its current home on Snake Hollow Road in Bridgehampton.

Show Size and Prizes

The Hampton Classic has grown a lot over the years. In 2006, more than 1,300 horses competed there. The show also offered over $500,000 in prize money for the winners.

What Happens at the Show?

Exciting Horse Jumping Competitions

The main event at the Hampton Classic is show jumping. Riders guide their horses over a course of obstacles, trying not to knock any down. The most important competition is the Grand Prix. This big event takes place on the last Sunday of the show. Even if it rains, the jumping contests usually continue. They only stop if the weather becomes too dangerous for the horses and riders.

The Social Scene

The Hampton Classic is also famous for its lively social atmosphere. Many fancy companies help sponsor the event. There's a special VIP tent that can hold 3,000 guests. Waiters in white coats serve food and drinks there. Visitors often walk around the show grounds with their dogs. Many people wear elaborate hats, especially for the prestigious Grand Prix event.

Dealing with the Weather

The show takes place during the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season. Because of this, the Hampton Classic has faced challenges with hurricanes and heavy rains. For example, in 1976, the tents were flattened by a storm just before the show began. In 2011, Hurricane Irene caused the start of the Hampton Classic to be delayed for three days.

Giving Back to the Community

The Hampton Classic is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. This means it has two main goals. First, it aims to put on a world-class horse event. Second, it supports other local charities. Each year, the Hampton Classic gives money to Southampton Hospital. It also provides other types of help to the hospital and many other charities in the area.
