Hanna is a small, quiet place in Lawrence County, South Dakota, United States. It's called an unincorporated community, which means it's a small settlement that doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Hanna is nestled in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota. You can find it along Hanna Road, south of the Hanna Campground. It's also west-southwest of the Lead Country Club and about twelve miles southwest of the town of Lead, South Dakota.

History of Hanna

Hanna was started in 1904. It was named after Marc Hanna, a United States Senator from Ohio. A senator is a person elected to represent their state in the U.S. government. Senator Hanna passed away shortly before the community was founded.

Long ago, a train track from the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad used to run through Hanna. This was important for moving goods and people. Today, Hanna is home to a pumping station. This station helps the Homestake Mine, which is a very famous gold mine in the area.

Hanna is located in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Its exact spot on a map is 44.261667 degrees North latitude and -103.844722 degrees West longitude. This means it's in the western part of South Dakota, known for its mountains and forests.

What is the Climate Like in Hanna?

The weather in Hanna changes a lot throughout the year. It has warm summers and cold, snowy winters. A weather station called North Rapid Creek, which is about 4.5 miles (7.2 km) south of Hanna, helps us understand the climate. This station is near the Buskala Historic Ranch.
