Johannes Wilhelm Cornelius (born September 27, 1863 – died August 23, 1947) was an important German philosopher and psychologist. A philosopher is someone who thinks deeply about life, knowledge, and how the world works. A psychologist studies the human mind and behavior. Cornelius was known for his ideas in a field called "neo-Kantianism," which was a way of thinking based on the work of an older philosopher named Immanuel Kant.

Life and Work

Early Life and Studies

Johannes Cornelius was born in Munich, Germany, on September 27, 1863. When he was younger, he studied mathematics, physics, and chemistry. He earned his Ph.D. in these subjects in 1886. After that, he decided to focus on philosophy.

University Career

In 1894, Cornelius became qualified to teach philosophy at the University of Munich. He taught there until 1903. Later, in 1910, he became a full professor at the Akademie für Sozialwissenschaften. This school later became part of the new University of Frankfurt in 1914. Some of his well-known students in Frankfurt included Max Horkheimer and Theodor Adorno.

His ideas were also influenced by a psychologist named Max Wertheimer.

Political Views

Johannes Cornelius was strongly against World War I. After the war ended in 1918, he joined the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD). This political party worked to make society more fair for everyone. In the 1920s, he supported the idea of a "European confederation." This was a plan for European countries to work closely together. He also wrote a paper in 1919 called Völkerbund und Dauerfriede, where he supported the idea of a League of Nations. The League of Nations was an early international group that aimed to keep peace around the world.

Family and Later Life

Johannes Cornelius was married and had children. He retired from his teaching career in 1928. He passed away in 1947 in Gräfelfing, Germany.
