Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Harasgna was an old village where Tongva Native Americans once lived. It was located in what is now Los Angeles County, California.

What Was Harasgna?

Harasgna was a settlement of the Tongva people, also known as the Gabrieleño. These Native Americans lived in the Los Angeles area for thousands of years. Harasgna was one of many villages they had in the region.

Harasgna in History

When the Spanish arrived in California, they built missions. One important mission was Mission San Gabriel. The Spanish kept records of the Native American villages, which they called rancherias. Harasgna was listed as one of these 27 villages. It was recorded alongside other villages like Hahamongna and Houtgna.

Harasgna and San Clemente Island

Some historical writers also connected Harasgna to San Clemente Island. For example, Hubert Howe Bancroft and Gustav Eisen wrote about this. They mentioned that the island itself was called Harasgna. The people living on San Clemente Island were known as the "Kinkipar." This shows how different areas and groups were connected long ago.
