History of Harbor Hills
Building the Community Pool
In 1956, the local government, the Town of North Hempstead, approved plans for a swimming pool and bathhouses in Harbor Hills. They also created a special group called the Harbor Hills Park District. This group was specifically made to manage the new park project.
A company named Schumacher & Forelle won the job to build the pool. Their bid was $169,500 (which was a lot of money back then!). They promised to finish the work in 110 days. The people living in Harbor Hills, about 175 families at the time, paid for this project.
Pool Reconstruction and Community Concerns
The community's pool was rebuilt again between 1986 and 1989. Just like the first time, the residents of Harbor Hills paid for this project. However, this second project caused some disagreements.
Some residents filed a lawsuit because they felt the payments and unexpected tax increases were unfair. The Harbor Hills Civic Association said that the Town of North Hempstead might have overpaid for the project. They also felt the town expanded the project too much and didn't talk to the local people enough about what was happening.

The area of Harbor Hills was first officially recognized as a "census-designated place" (CDP) for the 2000 United States Census. This means it's a specific area defined by the U.S. Census Bureau for collecting population data.
