Hardraw Force is a beautiful waterfall in the Yorkshire Dales in England. It's found on a stream called Hardraw Beck. This amazing waterfall is inside a wooded valley known as Hardraw Scar.

You can find Hardraw Force just outside the small village of Hardraw. It's about 0.9 miles (1.5 km) north of the town of Hawes in Wensleydale. The famous Pennine Way walking path goes very close to the waterfall.

Hardraw Force is special because it's a single drop of 100 feet (30 m) (about 30 meters). It falls from a rocky overhang. Many people say it's England's highest waterfall that falls in one unbroken drop. This is true if you don't count waterfalls hidden underground. For example, a waterfall inside nearby Gaping Gill falls over 300 feet (91 m) underground!

The rocks around Hardraw Force are like a sandwich. The bottom layer, where the water lands, is soft shale. On top of that is harder sandstone. The very top layer is a type of rock called carboniferous limestone.

If you want to see the falls, you can go through a special entrance next to the Green Dragon Inn in Hardraw village. There's a small fee to enter. You used to be able to walk behind the waterfall, but now that area is closed for safety.

Hardraw Scar: A Natural Amphitheatre

Hardraw Scar is a stunning limestone gorge located right behind the Green Dragon Inn. It's a natural bowl-shaped area. Every September, this gorge becomes a stage for a popular brass band contest. Bands from all over the North of England come to play here. It's a fun event for both the musicians and the audience.

The gorge is right next to the Pennine Way walking path. At the very end of Hardraw Scar, you'll find the impressive Hardraw Force waterfall. To get into the gorge and see the waterfall, you need to go through the pub.

In 1899, a huge flood rushed over the waterfall. The powerful water caused a lot of damage in Hardraw village. It even pulled coffins out of the graveyard! The very edge of the waterfall was broken by the flood's force. The landowner at the time, Lord Wharncliffe, had his team fix the waterfall's edge. Now, metal stakes help hold it together at the top.
